Locating the crankshaft-position sensor on your 2000 Jeep Cherokee is the first step in replacing or troubleshooting it. The sensor is responsible for tracking the speed and position of the crankshaft when the engine is running. The information it gathers is sent to the Jeep's computer to assist with crank timing. Locating the sensor can only be done from under the Jeep.
Raise the front of your Jeep Cherokee with a jack, then position a set of jack stands under the axle tubes. Lower the jack until the Jeep is resting securely on the jack stands, then remove the jack from under the Jeep.
Slide under the driver’s side of the Jeep just behind the front wheel. Look up under the Jeep and find where the transmission and the engine meet. There is a obvious seam and several bolts that will indicate the joining of these two components.
Look at the bell housing, following the seam up to about the 10 o’clock position, and you will find a sensor mounted on two studs. The front of the sensor is pointed in a hole on the bell housing and the rear has a wiring harness coming out of it. This is the crankshaft-position sensor for your 4.0-liter engine.
