How to Remove the Ignition Lock on a Ford 250

The lock cylinder on your Ford F-250 controls the power routed to the ignition and accessories of your truck. If the ignition lock cylinder begins to stick or fail, you should replace it before it fails completely. You need to be able to turn the lock cylinder in order to remove it. Waiting until the cylinder fails completely can result in damage to your steering column during removal. Buy a new lock cylinder from an auto parts store or Ford dealership.

Things You'll Need

  • Punch or similar tool
  • Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the “RUN” position.

  • Locate the small hole beneath the lock cylinder on the steering column. Insert a punch or other small tool into the hole and press the release button.

  • Pull the lock cylinder straight out of the steering column while you are pressing on the release button with the punch.
