How to Change the Oil in a 2006 Volvo XC90

With seating for up to seven people and the expected Volvo attributes of safety and reliability, the XC90 is a good choice for those seeking a practical crossover SUV. Like all cars, the XC90's engine should receive regular oil changes to ensure the long life of its engine. While this can be done at the dealer or a mechanic of your choice, this is also a job easily completed by the owner, saving money in the process.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Jack stand ramps
  • Rags
  • Funnel
  • Drive the front end of the Volvo up onto the jack stand ramps. Open the hood. Remove the lid for the oil filter housing, located on the passenger side of the engine. Remove the oil filter cartridge inside the housing.

  • Remove the six 10 mm bolts that hold the black skid plate to the chassis under the engine to get at the oil drain pan.

  • Place the oil drain pan below the engine. Loosen and remove the 17 mm drain plug with a socket and the ratchet. Allow the oil to drain out for 15 or 20 minutes. Wipe up any spilled oil.

  • Reinstall the oil drain bolt with a new crush washer and tighten the drain bolt. Do not over-tighten. Reinstall the skid plate.

  • Clean the inside of the oil filter housing. Install a new cartridge filter and O-ring in the oil filter housing. Reinstall the lid for the oil filter housing. Tighten the bolt that holds the housing on with a torque wrench to 25 foot-pounds.

  • Remove the oil cap from the top of the engine. Pour 7.7 quarts of oil into the engine with the funnel. Replace the oil cap. Back the car off the ramps.
