How to Know When a Car Needs a Fuel Filter

When you pump gas into your car's tank, you may also be pumping in small particles of debris. Sometimes, debris may be present simply because your tank's walls are starting to flake. The fuel filter's job is to filter out the debris. Over time, the fuel filter will become clogged, and less fuel will be able to pass through it. When this happens, the fuel filter needs to be replaced.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel filter
  • Replace your fuel filter at least every two years or 24,000 miles, according to Edmunds.com, even if you do not notice any obvious signs that it needs to be replaced. You can also check your car's owner manual for recommendations specific to your make and model.

  • Observe your car's performance. If the fuel filter is clogged, the engine may sputter, particularly at highway speeds, because its fuel can't flow properly.

  • Evaluate whether your car has been stalling. Stalling could also mean a clogged fuel filter.

  • Start your car. Cars that hesitate to start may need a new fuel filter. If the filter is completely clogged, your car may not start at all.
