The alternator or generator in your Suzuki Grand Vitara is responsible for supplying power to both the electrical system and the ignition system, as well as charging the battery at the same time. If the alternator fails, the car will continue to run, using power from the battery to power the ignition and electrical system, but only until the battery is dead. Replacing the alternator with a new or remanufactured unit is the only solution if your alternator has started to fail. If you let it go, you will end up stranded on the side of the road.
Position the alternator so that the stub for the battery cable on the rear of the alternator is straight up. Slide the alternator into the engine compartment and line the alternator up with the mounting brackets on the engine.
Install the lower mounting bolt from the old alternator into the lower bracket and hole in the new alternator. Install the upper mounting bolt through the upper mounting bracket and into the alternator. Tighten both bolts to 16.5 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
Install the single cable with the ring connector to the rear of the alternator. Slide it on the vertical stud on the back of the alternator and tighten the nut and washer on the stud with a wrench. Torque the nut to 6 foot-pounds with your torque wrench.
Plug in the wiring harness connector to the back of the alternator. It will click when it is locked and all the way into the alternator.
Release the tension on the belt tensioner by moving the tensioner clockwise with a socket and ratchet. Install the belt on the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
Install the evaporative emissions canister into the bracket just above the alternator, then place the air cleaner intake hose on the throttle body and air box. Tighten the hose clamps on both ends of the hose with a flat screwdriver.
Connect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal and tighten it with a wrench. Start the engine and make sure that the belt is on correctly, the alternator is turning and there are no warning lights on in the car.
