Replacing or changing vacuum lines on your Jeep needs to be done with some attention to detail and care. The vacuum lines that run across your engine are a critical part of the emissions system on Jeep engines. One cracked line can cause the engine to run rough, stall or not run at all. Inspection of the hoses and lines in the emissions system should be part of the maintenance plan for your Jeep. Checking them for cracks, dry rot or other damage will allow you to find and replace problem hoses and lines before your Jeep's functionality is affected.
Inspect the vacuum lines on your Jeep's engine. Make note of any cracked, rotted or damaged lines that need to be replaced. You will need to purchase replacement vacuum lines or hoses in the proper sizes to replace the damaged line.
Select a line or hose that you found damaged and in need of replacement. Remove the damaged line on one end, pulling it straight off the fitting. Trace the line down to the opposite end of the line and remove it. Again, it will just pull loose from the fitting. Make sure you do not take more than one line off at a time.
Measure a new piece of hose or line to replace the one you just removed. You can use a tape measure or just lay the old line out and use it as a guide if it is still in one piece.
Cut the new line or hose to length with a utility knife. Install the new line on the engine in place of the one you removed. Be sure to attach the line firmly at both ends by pushing it onto the fitting. The hose will fit tightly on the fitting and no clamps are needed in most cases.
Continue replacing lines and hoses as needed until you have replaced all of the damaged vacuum lines on the engine. You may need several different size hoses or lines to complete this project. They are available at any auto parts store.
