How to Tow the Toyota Prius

Toyota equipped its 2014 Prius with towing eyes for the front of the car to simplify emergency towing situations. To install the towing eyes, find the small covers in the front bumper, just below and inboard of the headlights. Wrap a rag around a flat screwdriver to pad it and prevent damage, and use it to pry the covers off. Thread the towing eyes into their sockets and tighten them with your tire tool. To tow for short distances, connect the tow chains or cables to the eyes. Make sure that the power switch is set to the "On" mode -- not the accessories position -- and that the shifter is in the neutral position. You may use this towing procedure in emergency situations over short distances, but you must limit your speed to 18 mph and a driver must ride in the Prius to control it while being towed.

Long-Distance or Behind an RV

  • If you can't get the transmission into neutral, or you wish to tow the Prius over long distances, such as behind a recreational vehicle, then it must be towed with the front wheels off the ground. Use a dolly to tow behind an RV, and use only lift-type tow trucks if calling on a professional tow service. Never use a sling-type truck to tow your Prius, and never tow the vehicle backward unless all four wheels are off the ground. Roll-back or flat-bed transport is acceptable -- just be sure that the hold-down binders are not too tight, or body damage can occur.
