The Nissan Altima GXE was the midline version of Nissan's midsize vehicle for its first two generations from 1993 to 2001. The GXE was placed between the base XE and sports-oriented SE. Replacing the Stanza, which had consistently poor sales numbers, the Altima is currently Nissan's best-selling vehicle. The GXE, being basically the same vehicle as the other trims, shares the same Altima problems with its siblings.
With the Altima GXE's first generation (1993 to 1997), the car's major problems lay with the engine and its HVAC (heating/air conditioning) system. Failure to start the car could be due to a bad crank angle sensor and/or ignition power transistor. The A/C system could start malfunctioning due to refrigerant leaks and expansion valve debris. Replacing the crank sensor and ignition power transistor can fix the starting problem, while the A/C system could be returned to normal function with replacement of the O-ring and clearing the debris from the expansion valve.
Some 1993 Altima GXEs may have throttle cable housing that detaches from the cable guide, thus requiring repositioning. Some 1994 and 1995 vehicles may have passenger air bags that are too powerful and consequently cause severe eye injuries (Nissan will replace the bag free of charge); and a few 1995 cars may have fragile shift lever lock plates, which prevent shift levers from moving from "Park" to "Drive" without the driver's direction (Dealers can install a bracket to prevent the shift position pin from breaking the plate). Some 1997 Altima GXEs may have brittle beat buckles that impact the effectiveness of the seat belt assembly; dealers can replace them free of charge.
Although Altima problems are comparatively reduced with its second generation (1998 to 2001), some cars may experience rough idling and stalling due to clogged spark plug vent holes or failure of the intake manifold gasket. In some cases, the "Check Engine" indicator will illuminate. Replacing the parts would resolve the rough idling and stalling.
Some 2001 GXEs fitted with Eagle Eyes headlamps have reflectors that corrode easily, thus adversely affecting safe illumination. Eagle Eyes, the manufacturer, can offer a refund for the defective lamps.
Some 1993 to 1999 Altima GXEs fitted with Pro-A Motors corner lamps, turn signals and headlights may not be equipped with amber side reflectors, a condition that fails to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, and results in poor illumination. Notify Pro-A Motors if you find the absence of the amber side reflectors so they can repurchase the lamps. Some 1998 to 1999 Altima GXEs may have Dope, Inc. corner or bumper lamps that have the same problem. However, Dope, Inc. will offer a refund rather than re-buy the lamps.
