How to Add Oil to Air Tools

Condensation forms as an air compressor pressurizes air. Air dryers remove some of the condensation, but condensation will still travel into the air tool connected to the air compressor. When the condensation reaches the air tool, the majority of the moisture exits the tool through the outlet. Some of the moisture settles around the rubber o-rings held within the air tool. The moisture forms sludge within the air tool. Specially formulated air tool oil lubricates the o-rings and removes the sludge from the tool. Do not use oil that does not state for air tool use.

Things You'll Need

  • Compressor
  • Air tool
  • Air tool oil
  • Air line
  • Turn the air tool upside down with the air fitting facing toward you.

  • Fill the air fitting that connects the tool to the air line with air tool oil. Depress the trigger of the air tool to let the oil into the tool.

  • Connect the air line to the air tool.

  • Point the outlet of the air tool away from you and toward the ground.

  • Depress the trigger of the air tool. Allow the air tool to run until no more oil emits from the air tool outlet.

  • Add additional oil to the air tool before each use to keep the air tool from clogging with sludge.
