Head Bolt Tightening Sequence for a 1992 Acura Legend

Your 1992 Acura Legend came equipped with a 3.2-liter V-6 engine. The cylinder head bolts have a specific loosening and tightening sequence, to prevent the heads from warping and ensure the machined surfaces mate precisely. Apply engine oil to the head bolt threads and washers before installation.

Loosening the Head Bolts

  • Starting at the front of the head and following the bolts clockwise around the head, loosen them in this order: 4, 6, 8, 2, 3, 5, 7, 1. Using this pattern, you'll loosen the bolts, starting from the outer bolts, in a cross pattern. Loosen each bolt about half a turn each in sequence until all bolts are loose.

Tightening the Head Bolts

  • To install the bolts, starting from the front of the head, and following the bolts clockwise around the head, tighten them in this order: 6, 4, 2, 8, 5, 3, 1, 7. Using this pattern, you'll tighten the bolts, starting from the inner bolts, in a cross pattern. Tighten the bolts in two steps, following the sequence -- the first step to 28 foot-pounds and the second step to 56 foot-pounds.
