When you disconnect the battery on your 2010 Pontiac G6, be aware that if you have the coupe or the convertible you'll have to reinitialize the power windows after you reconnect the battery. If your G6 is equipped with OnStar, open and close the driver's door after pulling the key from the ignition, to disable the retained accessory power. Failure to disable RAP will damage the OnStar back-up battery system.
Make a note of your radio presets, turn off all lights and accessories, then turn the ignition off. Disengage the clips holding the battery cover and remove the cover.
Loosen the negative battery terminal bolt and remove the negative cable. Route the cable aside so it doesn't touch the battery post. Loosen the positive battery terminal bolt and remove the positive cable.
Find the battery hold-down retainer on the inboard side of the battery. Remove the retainer bolt and the retainer. Lift the battery out of the engine compartment -- take care not to tip the battery much as you remove it.
Clean the battery terminals and posts with a battery terminal and post cleaner. Set the new battery in the battery tray. Install the retainer and tighten the bolt to 18 foot-pounds.
Install the positive terminal and tighten the bolt, then install the negative terminal and tighten the bolt. Torque both bolts to 13 foot-pounds.
Set the battery cover in place. Engage the cover tab nearest the strut tower first, the tab nearest the engine second and the tab next to the powertrain control module last.
Start the G6 and let it idle while you reprogram your radio presets and set the clock. Drive the car for at least 10 miles in city traffic and on the highway to allow the computer to relearn its adaptive strategy systems.
