The license-plate light you select will directly influence the difficulty of your installation process. If your motorcycle features existing mounts for license-place lights, virtually any lights designed for license plates will work. If your bike does not already feature a place to mount license-plate lights, the "TiteLite" product, or similar products like the Küryakyn, will make installation considerably easier.
Mount the lights you select directly over top of your motorcycle's license plate. If your plate is in its original location and is already equipped for lighting, simply use the existing mounting location and wiring to connect your new lights. If your bike is not already equipped for plate lights, or if you have moved your tag, the "bolt light" (TiteLite, Küryakyn or similar) products linked from this article double as a license-plate mounting screw; just attach the light to the mounting hole for your plate and proceed to Section 3.
Motorcycle license-plate lights use a simple lighting circuit that consists only of a positive and negative lead (usually color-coded red and black, respectively). If your bike was already wired for license-plate lights, simply splice these two wires into your existing plate lighting wires by stripping a small portion of insulation from the existing wires, twisting the new light wires onto the exposed wire, and covering with electrical tape. If your bike is not already wired for license-plate wiring, and if the leads from the new lights do not reach into the bike's inside area, connect a length of 14-gauge copper wire to the wiring leads and extend it into the inside of the bike (drilling a small hole if necessary). Inside the bike, splice the new wire into the existing tail-light relay using the splicing steps described above. When both (positive and negative) wires are connected, the license-plate lights will illuminate any time the bike's tail light is on.
