Disabling or disconnecting an alarm enables you to operate your vehicle without worrying about the alarm activating. This is often necessary if you lose the key fob connected to your keyless entry and haven't had a new fob activated yet. Fortunately -- unlike many American-made cars -- the 1997 Volkswagen Jetta has alarm controls in the back of the vehicle, making it easy disable or disconnect the alarm if needed.
Turn the key in the driver's side door. Unlocking the door manually deactivates the alarm, temporarily allowing you to access the car.
Open the trunk. Either use the key or pull the release from inside the car to open the Jetta's trunk.
Find the two alarm switches in the trunk. Look along the side of the trunk for two black switches that have a Volkswagen emblem on them. They are the only two switches in the Jetta's trunk, so they shouldn't be hard to find.
Press down on both switches to disable the alarm. Then, pull one of the switches out of the socket to disconnect the alarm entirely.
