How to Install a Ceiling Mount for an Auto DVD Player

Among the few places an auto DVD player can be installed, the ceiling is a popular location. Fastening a DVD player to your car's ceiling requires a special player with a built-in ceiling mount. Not all vehicles, though, are equipped to handle a ceiling mount. There must be a solid sheet of plastic, metal or plywood to fasten the mount to.

Things You'll Need

  • Adhesive remover
  • Plastic, metal or plywood sheet
  • Adhesive spray
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Chose a spot on your vehicle's ceiling for the DVD player. The best location is near the center of the ceiling, between the backrests of both front seats, provided a dome light isn't in the way. The DVD's monitor will then be visible to people in the back seat, without distracting the driver.

  • Feel the ceiling with your fingers before installation. There should be a metal sheet covering the headboard and covered by the upholstery. The mount will be attached to this sheet. If there is no sheet, you'll have to make your own.

  • If you decide to make your own metal, plywood or plastic sheet, first pull away the upholstery on the ceiling. You may need to spray an adhesive remover on the porous upholstery to dissolve the glue on the other side before you can peel the material back. This will take some effort.

  • Insert a plastic, metal or plywood sheet between the headboard and the upholstery. Apply a strong adhesive spray to the sheet's surface and the uncovered headboard so the upholstery will bond to it.

  • Fasten the mount to the ceiling. Drill holes for the screws that came with the mount into the stock metal sheet or the one you inserted.
