How to Unlock GPS Controls While in Drive for the Lexus IS250

The navigation system on the Lexus IS250 requires stopping the vehicle and engaging the parking brake before you can access the controls. Disable this safeguard by slightly modifying the navigation system wiring behind the navigation unit.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Plastic scribe
  • Ratchet
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • 2 wire nuts
  • Electrical tape
  • Put the vehicle in "Park" and engage the emergency brake.

  • Grasp the forward tip of the silver trim to the left of the shifter; lift it up and back to disengage the clips and remove it. Repeat on the silver trim to the right of the shifter.

  • Grasp the shift knob firmly, and twist it counterclockwise. Unscrew the shift knob and remove it.

  • Open the ashtray door and grasp the front of the shifter plate. Pull upward to disengage the clips and remove it.

  • Remove the screws on each side of the ashtray assembly using a Phillips screwdriver. Lift up the ashtray assembly to remove it.

  • Locate the four, small slits in the upper inner lip of the two air vents (two in each vent) above the navigation screen. Insert a small, flathead screwdriver into each slit at a 45-degree angle. Pry downward to disengage the clips. Repeat on each of the slits, and release all four clips.

  • Insert a plastic scribe between the vent covers and the dash. Pry away to remove the vent covers.

  • Remove the four bolts securing the navigation unit using a 10 mm ratchet. Two bolts are directly below the top vents, beneath the vent covers. Two are below the stereo system controls above the ashtray assembly.

  • Pull the navigation unit forward until you can access the wiring behind the unit.

  • Cut the pink wire on the J50 connector -- the top connector nearest the driver side. Cut the white wire on the P1 connector -- the top connector nearest the passenger side. Cut approximately 1 1/2 inches of wire from the connectors on the back of the navigation unit.

  • Remove approximately 1/2 inch of wire insulation from the two cut wires. The wires are located on the back of the navigation unit's side and the vehicle's side.

  • Screw a wire nut onto the stripped portion of both wires from the navigation unit's side.

  • Connect the pink and white wires from the vehicle's side. Wrap the wires in electrical tape.
