About Remote Starters

Remote starters for your vehicle start your car from a reasonable distance. Some vehicles come equipped with remote starters. If your car doesn't already have this option installed, you can buy an after-market starter and have it installed. While a remote starter has its advantages, there are certain things you'll want to take into consideration before purchasing one.

Function

  • A remote starter allow you to start your vehicle from the comfort of your home or another building. The sole purpose of the remote starter is added convenience. It allows you to warm up or cool down your car, depending on the outside temperature, with the push of a button or two.

Features

  • Most car starters automatically shut off the car after predetermined time, such as ten minutes. This is ideal in case you get sidetracked before you leave. Remote starters offer safety features. For example, although your car is running, it will not move unless the key is in the ignition. You can also purchase a remote starter with keyless entry. This means no more fumbling with trying to get the keys in the lock.

Benefits

  • On a cold day, a remote starter allows you to warm up your car without going out in the cold. It also cuts down on the need to scrape ice from the car windows. On a hot day, it allows you to cool down your car before entering it.

Warning

  • Unless you have experience with such projects, installing a remote starter is not a good do-it-yourself project. The wiring in your car is not something you want to take chances with.

Considerations

  • What should you look for when purchasing an after-market remote starter? Perhaps the number one priority would be a warranty. Is it a lifetime warranty? Are there any conditions that would negate the warranty? Read the terms carefully before you make your purchase.
Also look for the range that the remote starter will cover. Some remote starters have a range of about 500 feet while others have a range of over 2,000 feet.
When purchasing your remote starter, consider purchasing it from a retailer that can also do the installation. Some places will not install a remote starter unless they sold it.
