How to Install Dynamat

Dynamat is a popular sound deadening material used frequently in the custom car business. This material sticks to the sheetmetal in a car or truck, and helps stop sheetmetal vibration as well as keep down the interior temperature. Although it can be time consuming to do an entire car, it's very popular just to use Dynamat in one area of the car that rattles, such as the trunk. To install the Dynamat, you only need a few special tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Heat gun
  • Scissors
  • Dynamat
  • Dynamat rolling tool
  • Locate the area where you want to apply Dynamat, such as across the trunk floor directly above the exhaust for heat reduction, or near the license plate cutout in a bumper. The area must be sheet metal.

  • Use scissors to cut the Dynamat to the approximate size you need. Don't worry if the piece does not exactly cover every square inch of the surface.

  • Peel back the protective masking paper on the Dynamat to reveal the sticky side of the Dynamat. Apply just one side of the Dynamat to a corner area where you want to start, while holding the rest of the Dynamat at a 90-degree angle to the surface to be covered.

  • Roll the Dynamat flat to the surface with a Dynamat roller, working from the corner. Apply a heat gun to the Dynamat. Roll again to smooth out any wrinkles and to ensure that the Dynamat properly conforms to every curve of the surface.

  • Overlap the installed sheet of Dynamat with additional pieces of Dynamat to fill in any gaps if necessary.
