How to Remove the Stereo in a 1992 Honda Accord

The 1992 Honda Accord's stereo, whether it is a sedan or coupe, is simple to access if you have the proper tools. Because the stereo mounting bolts are so far into the dash, a special tool is required to access and loosen them. Fortunately, there is a way around this that involves removing the center console. While this method isn't as fast, it still only takes 15 to 20 minutes and isn't that difficult.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • 8mm ratchet
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with the pliers. This is required when working with car audio equipment to prevent damage to the equipment or electrical shock.

  • Remove the four Phillips head screws from the center console mounted around the gearshift knob. There are two screws on each side of the console.

  • Grab the console with both hands. Lift it up and toward the rear of the Accord to maneuver it over the gearshift knob. Move the plastic console away to make room for the procedure.

  • Slide out the ashtray and then remove the ashtray's mounting bracket. There are three Phillips screws that secure the metal bracket. Once these are removed, the bracket will pull straight out.

  • Loosen the two 8mm bolts with a ratchet--removal isn't necessary. These bolts secure the radio by clamping the mounting bracket. With the bolts loosened, pull the radio out of its compartment. Unplug the wiring for the antenna cable and harness from the rear.
