How to Install XM in a Prius

XM satellite radio, now more properly known as Sirius XM Radio, produces satellite radio units that integrate into the multi-function display of all second-generation Toyota Prius models and beyond. This means that all Priuses from 2004 onward can add XM, Sirius or their more recently combined satellite radios to their cars. The radios can be installed in the glove box, but they more frequently use the shelf space beneath the in-dash stereo.

Things You'll Need

  • XM satellite radio
  • Pliers
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • 10-mm drive sockets
  • Electrical insulation tape
  • Self-tapping screws
  • Disconnect the negative battery lead from the Prius's 12-volt battery. Use pliers to loosen the clamp that secures the cable to the battery post.

  • Remove the stock Prius radio, first removing the vents on both sides of the radio. The Prius radio is held by a bracket attached to the console between the vent sections. Use a screwdriver and a 10-mm socket wrench to remove this bracket.

  • Remove the vents to either side of the in-dash stereo. Loosen them from their tops using a cloth-covered flat screwdriver, then ease the vent section forward.

  • Lift the rear portion of the center console insert and tilt it forward. Remove the front clip that holds the console in place.

  • Lift the lever in the center console that releases the console. Lift out the console panel with both hands.

  • Unplug the three cables connected to the radio, then remove the four screws with the Phillips screwdriver that hold the car radio to the bracket.

  • Plug the satellite radio's cable into the extra connection port on the rear of the Prius radio. Plug speaker wires into the wiring harness. Prevent any potential shorting by wrapping bare wires with electrical tape.

  • Drill pilot holes underneath the shelf space. Attach the satellite radio unit into the console space using self-tapping screws and the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Reassemble the center console and reattach the vent sections.

  • Reattach the battery cable. Fit the negative battery connector over the terminal, and firmly tighten the bolt with the pliers.

  • Reset electrical presets that have been cleared by the disconnection of the battery.
