For car-stereo enthusiasts, the pursuit of a complete sound system can take different paths. There are many aftermarket components that you can add to your stereo to achieve better sound quality and volume. For a truly complete sound, with accurate reproduction of all sounds throughout the sonic spectrum, adding a subwoofer is the only way to go. Jeep Cherokee owners have the benefit of the rear cargo area as a perfect location for mounting their new sub. You can have an audio technician hook-up the subwoofer, or you can do it yourself.
Disconnect the Jeep's battery grounding cable. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the cable's clamp. Remove the clamp from the negative lead post and rest it away from the battery.
Connect the amplifier ring terminal (included in the amplifier wiring kit) to the positive battery lead. Connect the power supply cable to the ring terminal.
Drill an opening from the engine compartment to the inside cabin of the Cherokee. Place a rubber grommet in the new opening to protect the cable.
Remove the stereo from the dash. Use a trim panel removal tool to pry the dash trim around the stereo away from the dash. Remove the bolts on either side of the stereo mounting bracket with a 10-millimeter socket wrench. Pull the stereo from the mounting bracket. Grab the wire connections in the back of the stereo by the plastic wire group binders. Pull the connections from the stereo.
Connect the stereo wiring from the Jeep to a wiring harness adapter. Connect the leads of the wiring harness adapter to the stereo.
Connect the turn-on lead (from the amp wiring kit) and patch cables to the wiring harness adapter. Run the cables to the rear cargo area of the vehicle. Use a trim panel removal tool to remove the trim panels at the door openings. Run the cables beneath the carpeting.
Run the power supply cable (from the battery) beneath the carpeting to the rear cargo area. Make sure that the power supply cable and the patch cables are routed on opposite sides of the Cherokee.
Replace the stereo in the mounting bracket. Replace the two bolts on either side. Put the dash trim panel surrounding the stereo back into place. The panel will snap into place with medium pressure by hand, around the perimeter.
Connect the patch cables, the turn-on lead, and the power supply cable to the appropriate outlets on the subwoofer.
Place the grounding cable clamp onto the negative battery lead. Tighten the clamp with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
