Component Speakers vs. Coaxial Speakers

Component and coaxial speakers both offer full-range audio reproduction with the use of a woofer and a tweeter. You must consider a few differences before choosing one type over another.

Features

  • Component speakers include a woofer and a separate tweeter as well as an external passive crossover that splits the audio signal based on a set frequency. Coaxial speakers have a tweeter attached to the speaker itself and include a more rudimentary passive crossover as well.

Sizes

  • Most component and coaxial speaker sets include a woof in the 4-to-6.5-inch range---the standard car speaker sizes, although the sizes can vary based on your needs. The tweeter, whether separate or connected, measures 1 inch in diameter.

Considerations

  • Coaxial speaker sets often cost less than similar component sets due to the passive crossover. Installing two separate items needed with a component set in a car often requires more work and proves more difficult than coaxial speakers, which you can install in the locations of your original speakers in your vehicle.
