Avoid This Mistake: Weak Clutch Linkage

Avoid This Mistake: Weak Clutch Linkage

If you’ve been driving a classic Mustang with a manual transmission for a while you probably understand this one. The original factory clutch Z-bar systems were terrible at best because they were never strong enough nor were they properly engineered for the task. We’ve often made the mistake of dialing in too much clutch for the task, or needing a stiff clutch to handle the power we built into the engine, which has only added insult to injury.

If you’re going to continue with a stock Ford clutch linkage, you need a more user-friendly clutch, such as this one from Modern Driveline. Modern Driveline stocks Superior and McLeod clutches for all classic Mustang applications. These are diaphragm clutches, which are easier to operate than those brutish original three-finger clutches. The Barillaro Speed Muscle Z-bar available from Modern Driveline is a fully adjustable clutch linkage with advanced engineering features like Heim joints and buttery smooth pivots.

You may also opt for a cable or hydraulic clutch release system depending on how far you want to go and how original you want your Mustang to be. The cable system is straight-forward and eases clutch operation.

And oh my aching left knee…
