How to Replace 2000 GMC Door Speakers

Replacing door speakers in your 2000 GMC truck is a cost-effective and fairly simple way to improve the sound quality of your truck. The stock 6-1/2-inch speaker is a common aftermarket size, so there are plenty of reliable replacement options. Replacing the speakers involves removing the door panel, so budget ample time to include that process in the job.

Things You'll Need

  • Panel tool
  • 7mm socket and ratchet
  • Drill with 1/8-inch bit
  • 1/2-inch #10 sheet-metal screws
  • Phillips screws
  • Pry off the sail panel from the upper front edge of the door panel using the tip of a panel tool. Pry out the door lock button from the door panel with the panel tool. Pry up and remove the power switch panel from the door with the panel tool.

  • Remove the 7mm bolts from the cavity exposed by the removal of the power switch panel from behind the door grab handle and from the bottom center of the door panel.

  • Lift the door panel straight up to remove.

  • Press in on a clip at the top of the speaker to release the speaker. Pull out the speaker and unplug the connector on the back.

  • Place the new speaker in the door opening and mark the position of the mounting holes on the perimeter of the speaker. Remove the speaker and drill 1/8-inch holes in the marked locations.

  • Plug the new speaker into the wiring unhooked earlier. Place the speaker in the door opening, lining up the mounting holes with the holes you just drilled. Screw the speaker into the door with sheet-metal screws.

  • Test the speaker. Replace the door panel.
