How to Remove the Stereo in a 1999 Dodge Ram

The 1999 Dodge Ram truck comes equipped with an AM/FM stereo with built-in CD player. Ram owners who wish to replace the stereo unit with an aftermarket deck,or make repairs or additions to their vehicle's stereo sound system will first need to remove the factory stereo. You can pay an aftermarket car audio specialist to do this, or remove the Ram's stereo deck yourself and save the cost of labor.

Things You'll Need

  • 10-mm wrench
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • 10-mm socket and drive
  • Pull the hood release lever under the dashboard on the driver's side of the truck. Move to the front of the vehicle and lift the hood. Loosen the bolt on the negative battery cable clamp with the wrench. Remove the cable's clamp from the battery terminal and set it aside. Move to the inside of the truck.

  • Place the trim panel removal tool into the crease at the top of the main dash panel and pry the panel away from the dashboard. Reach your hand into the opening and pull the panel away from the dash. Work your hands around the perimeter of the panel until it is free from the dashboard.

  • Remove both of the 10-mm bolts that secure the stereo into the Ram's stereo bracket with the socket and drive. Slide the stereo from the dashboard stereo dock until the wiring connection in the rear of the unit are reachable by hand.

  • Unplug the two stereo wiring connectors from the back of the truck's stereo deck. Unplug the antenna cable lead from the antenna outlet on the bottom left corner of the stereo to complete the removal.
