How to Connect an iPod to a Car CD Player

There are several ways to connect an iPod to a car CD player. The best way is with an iPod Smart Cable, which is specifically configured for iPod technology. This smart cable is actually a little box made from Apple that was designed for iPod connections to a car. The iPod is connected to the box and then the box is connected to the car CD changer or stereo. The components of the iPod Smart Cable can be bought individually or as a kit.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • iPod Smart Cable
  • Disconnect the black (negative) battery cable of your car with a wrench. (This is a safety precaution so you do not hurt yourself or damage the vehicle's electronic components.)

  • Pry off the dash around the CD player head unit with a flat head screwdriver. Be careful that you do not break any of the panels. These will easily pop out of place with a small amount of force.

  • Unscrew the CD head unit to allow access to the back of the unit. Be careful when sliding this out, as it will have other electrical connections. Attach the one end of the audio cable from the smart cable box to the CD changer jack. Push the cable into the jack and make sure it is all the way in. The CD changer jack is basically the audio in plug for the stereo. Refer to the stereo manual for its location, as it varies depending on the CD changer.

  • Mount the iPod smart connection module in an area that is out of the way but can easily be accessed to connect the iPod. The module is a silver box that contains the electronics needed to charge the iPod and send the iPod signal to the CD changer. A storage area near the CD player head unit or the glove compartment are two possibilities. With the module mounted, connect the audio cable that is plugged into the back of the CD player.

  • Connect the iPod module data cable to the module unit. The other end of the cable will be attached to the iPod. The data cable will send all the audio information from the iPod to the module.

  • Using your vehicle's wiring diagram, connect the module's power cable to the power outputs and then to the module. The wiring will vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle. This is a permanent connection, as the module stays in the car. It is the iPod that can be removed from the vehicle.

  • Slide the CD player head unit back into place and replace the dash panel. Secure the wires that connect the module to the CD player out of the way. Once everything is in place, reconnect the car battery wires and test the unit to ensure that it is working properly.
