How do I Remove the Factory Stereo in a 1997 Cadillac Deville?

Owners of the 1997 Cadillac Deville will likely need to remove their factory stereo unit at some point for repair or replacement. Car stereo enthusiasts may elect to install external devices or connections making iPod and satellite radio receivers possible. The first step in any such endeavor will be removing the stereo from the Cadillac's stereo dock. You can take your Deville to a GM dealership or a professional car audio technician, or you can remove the unit yourself and save some cash.

Things You'll Need

  • 10-mm wrench
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Pull the hood release lever located under the dashboard on the driver's side of the Deville. Move to the front of the Cadillac and lift the hood. Loosen the bolt that secures the Deville's grounding cable to the negative battery terminal. Lift the cable from the terminal and set it aside to avoid shorting the vehicle's electrical system during the stereo removal.

  • Pry the trim panel from around the gear selector box with a trim panel removal tool. Remove the panel and set it aside. Grab the trim bezel surrounding the stereo and climate control panel at the bottom edge of the panel and pull it away from the dashboard. Use two hands to ensure that the panel is removed with even pressure on both sides.

  • Pull the plastic levers on either side of the stereo mounting dock to release the stereo from the vehicle's stereo bracket. Slide the stereo from the dashboard dock to access the wiring connectors plugged into the outlets on the rear panel of the stereo.

  • Unplug the two wiring connectors connected to the outlets on the back panel of the stereo unit. Unplug the FM antenna cable from the antenna input on the rear panel of the head unit. Place the grounding cable clamp back over the negative battery terminal post. Tighten the clamp to the post with the wrench.
