How to Put an After Market Radio in a 2001 Jetta

The 2001 Volkswagen Jetta comes standard with an AM/FM stereo with a single disc CD player. Optional stereos include systems capable of playing mp3 files and multi-disc changers. Jetta owners who desire a more powerful stereo can choose from scores of optional decks from aftermarket stereo manufacturers. The Jetta requires certain adapters to connect to various units, but once the wiring gap is bridged, you can install a new stereo without having previous car audio experience.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench, 10 mm
  • Volkswagen stereo install kit (with flat stereo removal tools and antenna adapter)
  • Aftermarket stereo installation sleeve
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Wiring harness adapter
  • Pull the hood release lever under the dashboard, on the driver's side of the Volkswagen.

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative lead post of the Jetta's battery. Loosen the cable's clamp with the wrench and move the cable away from the battery until the aftermarket stereo is completely installed.

  • Slide the Volkswagen flat stereo removal tools into the slots at either end of the factory radio's face. Push the tools into the openings until they snap into place inside the stereo dock.

  • Push the tools inward to release the mechanism inside the stereo dock that will release the deck.

  • Pull the radio from the Jetta's stereo dock and disconnect the wiring plugged into the outlets on the backside of the unit.

  • Insert the installation sleeve into the stereo mounting dock. Fold the sleeve's flaps down with a flat screwdriver to secure it into the Volkswagen's dock.

  • Plug the Volkswagen stereo wiring into the leads of a wiring harness adapter.

  • Plug the wring harness adapter leads into the aftermarket stereo outlets on the rear panel of the deck.

  • Place the VW antenna adapter over the antenna lead and plug it into the FM antenna outlet on the right side of the aftermarket stereo's rear panel.

  • Slide the new stereo into the mounting sleeve until it snaps into place.

  • Replace the negative battery cable onto the negative battery terminal and tighten the cable's clamp with the wrench. Close the Jetta's hood.
