How to Wire an Amp & Sub in an Eclipse

Adding an amplifier and and pair of sub-woofers to your Mitsubishi Eclipse is a perfect way to customize and improve your stereo system. The amplifier and sub-woofer should be placed in the trunk of the Eclipse, and all of the wires will need to be guided to the rear of the stereo receiver and the battery from the trunk. There is a hole in the fire wall on the passenger side that will allow the amplifier's power wire to be guided into the engine compartment and up to the battery. Just about anyone can accomplish this job in an hour's time.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire cutters
  • Speaker wire
  • Wire strippers
  • Screw driver
  • 8 gauge amplifier wire
  • RCA cables
  • Cut 2 strips of 2 feet of speaker wire using the wire cutters. Strip the ends of the speaker wires using the wire strippers. Insert the wires into the wire connections on the rear of the sub-woofer box in there corresponding connections. Guide the speaker wires to the amplifier connections. Insert the speaker wires into the corresponding connections on the amplifier, and tighten the amplifier's connections using the screw driver.

  • Cut 4 feet of 8 gauge amp wire and strip both ends of the wire using the wire strippers. Connect one end of that wire to the ground connection on the amplifier, and tighten the connection on the amp using the screw driver. Connect the opposite end of that wire to the metal frame of the Eclipse using a metal screw on the frame. Loosen the screw using the screw driver, and place the wire's end under the edge of the screw. Tighten the screw to the frame.

  • Cut 12 feet of 8 gauge amp wire using the wire cutters, and strip both ends of the wire using the wire strippers. Insert one end on that wire into the power connection on the amplifier, and tighten the amplifier's connection using the screw driver.

  • Connect the RCA cables into the colored inputs on the amplifier corresponding with the colored connections on the RCA cables. Guide the 8 gauge amplifier's power wire and the RCA cables along the passenger side of the Eclipse to the front passenger side foot area. Tuck the wire behind the rear side panel, behind the rear seat and the floor panels to conceal the wires.

  • Locate the passenger side dash securing screws under the dash and remove the screws using the screw driver. Pull the dash forward to gain access to the rear of the stereo receiver. Plug the RCA cables into the rear of the stereo receiver in their corresponding connections. Replace the dash to its original position and secure the dash to the frame using the screws and the screw driver to tighten the screws.

  • Pull the passenger side floor cover off of the fire wall and tuck the RAC cables under the cover. Remove the plug from the fire wall and guide the 8 gauge amp wire into the engine compartment. Replace the floor cover to its original position.

  • Open the hood of the Eclipse and locate the amplifier's power wire. Guide the amp wire to the battery and connect the wire to the battery using a battery connector.
