How to Remove a Stereo From a 2004 Toyota Corolla

The 2004 Toyota Corolla came with several models of stereos: those with a CD player or a cassette player or a satellite radio receiver. To make repairs to a factory-installed stereo in the Toyota Corolla or to replace the stock deck, you need to properly remove the stereo from the Toyota's dashboard. You can choose to take your Corolla to an audio technician to have the factory deck removed, or you can do it yourself with little previous car audio experience.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 mm wrench
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • 5/16-inch Allen wrench
  • Thin cloth
  • Open the hood of the Toyota Corolla. Loosen the bolt on the negative battery cable with the 10 mm wrench at the connection with the negative battery lead. Rest the negative battery cable away from the battery until the removal is finished.

  • Place the flat screwdriver in the crease between the trim panel that surrounds the gear selector lever and the outer trim of the center console. Pry the panel away from the center console.

  • Remove the two screws at the bottom of the storage compartments below the stereo with a Philips-head screwdriver.

  • Pull out the center climate control knob from the dash panel by hand. Remove the three screws beneath the control knob with a Philips-head screwdriver.

  • Pull the center dash panel away from the dashboard of the Toyota.

  • Remove the four bolts at the bottom of the stereo mounting bracket with the Allen wrench.

  • Pull the stereo from the dashboard far enough to reach the wiring connections at the back of the unit.

  • Disconnect the wiring from the vehicle to the stereo by hand. Pull the speaker wires by the plastic wire binders, not the wires themselves.
