How to Replace a Door Speaker in a Ford Escort

Replacing speakers can be a frustrating task but, with a bit of patience, the right knowledge and the correct tools, you can have a new speakers in your Ford Escort in an hour or less.

Things You'll Need

  • 6.5" Speakers Wiring harness Flat head screwdriver Phillips head screwdriver
  • The first step to replacing a Ford Escort door speaker is to remove the door panel. First, remove the trim around the door handle and the arm rest. Both will contain screws that need to be taken out. Once the screws are out, you can pry the trim off with a flat head screwdriver by placing it under the trim and pulling gently towards yourself.

  • Once you have removed the trim, look for screws around the door panel and remove them. Once you are sure you've removed all friction fittings and screws, pull the door panel up and out. It may take some wiggling and power to get the panel off. If it gives too much resistance, go back and make sure you've removed all screws and fittings. If you are sure all the screws are out, take your hand and place it behind the panel. The Ford Escort has clips on the interior too, which normally give with a bit of pulling, but sometimes have to be pressed on manually to get them to release.

Continue sliding the panel up and out until it is completely released; then, set it aside.

  • Once inside the panel, you will see a speaker in a mount. Using a screwdriver, remove the speaker by removing the screws that hold it to the mount. Pull it out, and then release it from the wiring harness. Do not cut the harness: you will need it.

  • Once you have removed the old speaker, take the new speaker out of the box. If you have bought speakers that are "ez fit" they will go directly into the mount. Take the speaker, and connect the wiring harness that came with the new speakers to the back. Be sure that all connections are correct.

Once you have connected that, take the end of the harness and connect it to the factory wiring that you took off of the old speaker. Place the speaker back into the mount and test it.

  • If all tests out OK, screw the speaker into the mount, and slide the door panel back into place. Once it clicks back into place, put the screws back into the door panel, and then put the trim back on. It will click into place.

Repeat the steps on the other door. Enjoy your new speakers!
