How to Make a Set of Lifting Blocks

Lifting blocks are a cost-effective way to raise the suspension of your truck or SUV without investing in aftermarket springs or lift kits. Lifting blocks are typically used on vehicles with leaf spring suspensions, resting between the leaf spring and the frame. To make your own set of lifting blocks, you must use materials that are as strong as or stronger than steel. If you use rubber or aluminum, you might create an unstable suspension.

Things You'll Need

  • Steel stock
  • Plasma cutter
  • Ruler
  • High-speed drill
  • Titanium drill bits
  • Remove the leaf springs from your vehicle if you have not done so already. The leaf springs must be out of the truck so you can measure the rectangular patch of frame on which the leaf springs rest.

  • Measure the rectangular patch of frame on which your truck's leaf springs rest. The space is typically 3 or 4 inches in width by 5 or 6 inches in length. Measure the space precisely to avoid fitting problems during the installation.

  • Choose the lift height you want for your vehicle. The height of your lift will serve as the height of the completed lifting block. For example, if you want to lift your truck by approximately 4 inches, you will create a lifting block that is 4 inches high.

  • Purchase steel stock using the measurements you obtained previously. Steel stock is typically found at steel manufacturers and wholesalers. You need steel stock that is at least as wide and as high as your measurements. You can trim the steel if needed later. For example, if you need a lifting block that is approximately 3 inches wide and 4 inches high, look for steel stock that is as close to these dimensions as possible.

  • Cut your steel stock to the approximate length you need to fit the space between the leaf springs and the frame. If you do not feel comfortable cutting the steel stock yourself using a plasma cutter, you can take the steel to a machine shop for cutting. Machine shops typically charge a small amount to cut the materials.

  • Drill holes in the lifting blocks that will allow the U-bolts to slide through. U-bolts hold the leaf spring to the axle of the vehicle. The U-bolt holes must align perfectly with the holes in the leaf springs to avoid fitment problems. Place the lifting blocks into position on the leaf spring and use a pencil to mark the location of the holes. Drill slowly to avoid making holes that are angled.
