How to Replace Factory Auto Lights With LEDs

LED (light emitting diode) headlights are a common replacement when considering an upgrade from OEM (original equipment manufacturer) headlights. Replacing your factory headlights with LED lights is a good choice for many reasons. LED lights consume less power, which leads to less battery consumption. They last longer than normal headlights. They are also smaller and can produce different colors of light.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • LED headlight kit w/ harness
  • Wire cutter/stripper
  • Soldering iron
  • Electrical tape
  • Disconnect the negative terminal of your battery. To disconnect, you'll need to remove the negative terminal from the negative post of your battery by unscrewing it, or loosening the bolt that connects it to the post. This depends on the make and model of your vehicle.

  • Seal any holes in your headlight cover with outdoor sealant so that no moisture can get into your headlight compartment. Let the sealant sit for as long as the directions indicate. LED headlights don't handle moisture as well as regular bulbs. Most newer cars don't have the headlight condensation problems that older cars had.

  • Remove your old headlights by removing the nuts that secure them on the back of the headlight assembly. You need to turn them slightly to remove them from the slot.

  • Disconnect the headlight bulbs from their harness by snapping them out of their lock tab.

  • Connect your LED light harness into the harness where the old headlights were connected.

  • Slide your LED headlights into the slot of the old one and rotate them until they turn into place.

  • Reattach the nuts that secure the back of the headlight assembly.

  • Reconnect the negative terminal of your battery.
