How to Install a Turbo on a Mustang

The Ford Mustang enjoys a wide array of aftermarket performance upgrade options, including forced-air induction systems such as superchargers and turbochargers. Turbochargers contain a spinning turbine wheel that forces additional air into the engine chambers, providing a sharp increase in horsepower and torque. Installing a supercharger is an involved procedure that requires time, tools and familiarity with the engine. Installation details will depend on the year and model of your Mustang and also on the specific turbocharger.

Things You'll Need

  • Automotive toolkit
  • Clean out dust and debris from the engine bay. Change the engine oil and the oil filter. Replace any oil pressure and drain lines that are kinked or damaged in any way.

  • Crank the engine until oil flows from the oil drain hole. Attach the new oil drain line from the turbocharger kit to the turbocharger itself.

  • Install the turbocharger mounting bracket onto the engine. Connect the airflow system to the turbocharger. Tighten all the bolts to manufacturer specifications using a torque wrench. Do not tighten the bolts excessively; this can damage the turbocharger or even the engine itself.

  • Start the Mustang and allow it to idle for a few minutes. Turn the Mustang off and inspect the ground underneath the Mustang for any fluid leaks.
