How to Install Jeep Wrangler Windshield Lights

It could be said the Jeep Wrangler is the Legos of cars. The doors, roof and windshield are all manufactured for easy removal and are completely compatible with virtually any other Jeep. Magazines like Quadratec contain thousands of easy aftermarket options that plug right into any model Jeep. One of these aftermarket options is a windshield lighting kit for off-road operation. The lights install into the body of the Jeep and wire into the engine and the cabin easily.

Things You'll Need

  • Torx screwdriver kit
  • Windshield light kit including wiring
  • Socket wrench set
  • Rotary cutting tool
  • Locate the lower windshield hinge. It is the upper hinge bracket where the windshield meets the body of the vehicle. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal with an open-face wrench.

  • Remove the stock windshield hinge Torx screws using the appropriate Torx screwdriver. Align the windshield light brackets onto the windshield hinge bracket and replace the Torx screws. Some Jeep specific off-road lights will come with new Torx screws for the hinge; install those, if equipped.

  • Place the windshield light or windshield light rail into the bracket and install the retaining bolts using a socket wrench. Attach the wiring kit to the lights and run the wires down into the engine compartment. If the windshield light is a rail of lights above the windshield than run the wires down into the cabin of the Jeep through the driver's side door.

  • Use the provided wiring kit to run the power source directly to the positive terminal of the battery. If the wire is run through the cabin of the vehicle, run it through the grommet near the gas pedal. Use a socket wrench to remove a bolt on the frame of the vehicle and install the windshield light's ground wire. Reinstall the bolt on the frame.

  • Run the instrument end of the wiring kit into the cabin through the firewall by way of the grommet. The grommet will feed into the cabin near the gas pedal.

  • Use zip ties to route the wire up and under the steering column to the opposite side of the steering wheel. Cut a small hole using a rotary cutting tool in the vacant space on the instrument panel left of the steering wheel and mount the off-road light switch there.

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal and close the hood.
