How to Install Winch Wiring

Using basic winching techniques, you can free your vehicle from some troubling situations. A winch works by connecting the winch's wire rope to a secure object, like a tree, and winding in the rope with a powerful electric motor. A winch is typically mounted to the frame of the vehicle near the front bumper. This location provides a strong connection to the vehicle to support the 10,000 to 20,000 pounds of force it can generate. Wiring your winch is the last step in the installation process.

Things You'll Need

  • Winch wiring kit
  • Cable ties
  • Wrench
  • Open the hood of the vehicle and look for a safe location to run the winch's wires from the front of the vehicle to the battery. Make sure not to interfere with the engine.

  • Run the wires along this path.

  • Loosen the battery's terminal nuts with a wrench.

  • Connect the positive wire to the positive terminal on the battery and the negative wire to the negative terminal. Tighten the battery's terminal nuts.

  • Secure the wires to the body of the vehicle with cable ties.
