Troubleshooting a Subaru Impreza Ignition

The Subaru Impreza is among the many vehicles from the manufacturer that features a simple ignition coil system. These ignition systems are located just to the right of the steering column, but are an often overlooked part of running the car. If your ignition switch has stopped working, you can troubleshoot this problem with a number of simple steps and have the coil working again in minutes.

  • Turn your key all the way to the left and to the right to see if it will work in these extreme positions, or to see if you can remove it from its slot.

  • Make sure your shifter is firmly in Park and turn the wheels hard in both directions. Do this to straighten your wheels out of any awkward positions, and this may free your coil to work properly.

  • Spray the ignition with a lubricant to attempt to use your cylinder and key with less friction.

  • Insert a wire into the key slot to see if there are any impediments restricting your key from moving or inserting all the way.

  • Remove the panels around the cylinder by unscrewing them and then popping them off. Do this to remove any restrictions stopping the ignition from working from the inside.
