How to Install Speakers & a Stereo on a 2003 Cavalier

The factory audio systems in most cars not the most powerful, especially in older models. It is often hard to just replace the speakers for better audio quality, as the head unit supplying audio to the speakers cannot harness the true power and quality of the new speakers. Therefore, by replacing both the stereo head unit and the speakers, the greatest improvement is achieved. Luckily, the wiring used is still the same standard, so unless existing wiring is damaged, new wiring does not have to be run.

Things You'll Need

  • Soldering iron
  • Plastic prying tool
  • Screwdriver
  • Head unit
  • Speakers
  • Harness adapter
  • Dash kit

Head Unit Removal

  • Remove the negative terminal of your battery to prevent electrical shock.

  • Remove the trim pieces that are surrounding the dash unit by gently pulling them off.

  • Remove any visible screws securing the dash unit.

  • Open the glove compartment and remove the two screws securing part of the dash unit.

  • Use the plastic tool to pull off the center-dash panel.

  • Remove the two exposed screws.

  • Remove the dash.

  • Remove the screws securing the head unit to the bracket.

Door Speaker Removal and Installation

  • Remove the two screws under the door handle.

  • Remove all screws along the door panel.

  • Pull of the door panel by prying off the clip along the top edge.

  • Repeat for opposite side.

  • Unscrew each of the door speakers.

  • Replace the two door speakers with your new speakers by soldering the existing wiring to them.

  • Reassemble the doors in the exact reverse order that you disassembled them.

Back Speaker Removal and Installation

  • Lower your back row of seats.

  • Remove the four exposed clips that are holding the rear dash in place.

  • Remove the trim pieces by gently prying them off.

  • Remove the four screws that are holding each speaker in place.

  • Attach the new speakers and solder the wiring.

  • Reassemble the rear dash exactly as you disassembled it.

Head Unit Installation

  • Connect your harness adapter to the existing harness.

  • Connect the adapter to your new head unit.

  • Connect your battery and ensure that all components are functional.

  • Secure the head unit to the bracket with screws.

  • Reassemble the dash in the exact reverse order that you disassembled it.
