How to Install a Performance Module

You can purchase performance modules for almost anything on wheels. These modules plug into the electronic control unit (ECU) of the vehicle. They reprogram the timing and the amount of fuel that is delivered to the engine. Performance modules increase the horsepower of the vehicle as well as throttle response. You can purchase them online or at your local auto parts store. Be prepared to verify the make, model, year and engine size to ensure you purchase and install the correct module.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Open the hood of the vehicle. You may need to pull a lever from inside of the vehicle near the dashboard.

  • Remove the nut that secures the negative battery cable to the battery using a wrench. The negative cable is the black cable.

  • Locate the ECU on the vehicle. Most ECUs are located on the firewall. If the ECU is not easily located, find a large wiring bundle inside the engine compartment and trace it until you locate the ECU. The ECU will have a large connector plugged into it. They vary in size but are often about 2 inches tall, 8 inches wide and 10 inches long.

  • Unplug the stock wiring connector from the ECU by pressing the release tabs on each side.

  • Plug the performance module into the ECU and verify that the levers snap into place to secure the performance module in place.

  • Plug the stock wiring harness into the opposite connection on the performance module.

  • Reinstall the negative battery cable and tighten the nut with a wrench. Lower the hood.
