How to Install an MSD Ignition

An MSD ignition increases horsepower through more complete burning of the fuel. It does this by way of increasing the spark intensity--instead of one spark, it gives off a multitude of sparks. These sparks begin at the normal timing setting but continue through several degrees of rotation. Depending on the coil used, MSD will produce over 50,000 volts. MSD is one of the best additions that can be done to any vehicle. This all adds up to a dramatic increase in mileage and much easier starting.

Things You'll Need

  • Electrical wire crimpers Assorted wire connectors Roll of 16 gauge wire Roll of 10 gauge wire Drill Assorted drill bits Phillips screwdriver
  • Mount the MSD box in a location that is vented. It should not be installed in a glove box, where it could overheat. It can be installed inside the vehicle under the dash or under the hood as long as it is kept away from the engine. The most popular spot is either on the firewall or the fender well. Make sure to use the rubber isolators that come with it to dampen the vibration. Mark and drill the holes with the proper-sized drill bit, line up the MSD with the holes, and screw the Phillips screws in with the screwdriver.

  • Connect the large black wire to a good spot on the engine. Make sure that it is kept away from severe heat.

  • Connect the large red wire directly to the battery or to a source of direct battery power. Use the proper wire end connector and crimp it securely with the wire crimpers. Connect the small-diameter red wire to the ignition switch run-wire so that the power will be off with the key off.

  • Look for the black and orange wires that are in a harness cover (on the MSD box). Attach the orange wire to the positive side of the coil and the black to the negative side. Use a small wrench of the appropriate size to remove and install the nuts on the terminals of the coil.

  • Determine what type of ignition system is used. If it is a conventional points-type distributor, the single white wire on the MSD should be used. The function of the points changes to acting as a switch for timing purposes. Use the proper wire connector and attach the white wire to the black wire on the distributor. Crimp the wires securely.
If an MSD distributor is being used, find the two-wire harness coming off the box with a plastic connector. This connector simply plugs into the MSD distributor.
