An injector driver module (IDM) amplifies the voltage from the battery to start up the injectors quickly in a powerstroke diesel vehicle. Making a few modifications to the IDM allows the injectors to start up faster and stay on longer, which improves the horsepower. The IDM is located behind the fender wall on the driver's side of the vehicle. With a few basic tools you can remove the IDM and modify it to improve the performance of your engine.
Disconnect the ground on the batteries in the truck. Using the 8mm and 10mm sockets, disconnect the IDM box connectors. Remove the box.
Cut around the seal on the IDM box cover with a sharp knife. Use a heat gun to soften the sealant if it's difficult to remove. Pry up the cover with a flat-head screwdriver.
Heat the solder affixing the 6042 chip to the board. When the solder is soft, remove the chip with tweezers. Vacuum up the solder to clean the board.
Bend the ends of the new resistor into a small rectangular shape using needle-nose pliers. Twist off or cut the excess resistor ends.
Add solder to the pads on the board and use tweezers to place the resistor. Vacuum up any excess solder.
Go around the edges of the IDM box with sealant and replace the cover. Place a rock or other heavy object on the cover to hold it down as the sealant dries. Once the sealant is dry, use the socket wrench to replace the IDM box in the vehicle. Re-connect the grounds on the batteries.
