How to Replace the Brakes in a Dodge Grand Caravan

The Dodge Grand Caravan is a dependable, long-lasting van fit for the entire family. Equipped with the latest safety features and affordable styling, the Grand Caravan is very popular. While the Grand Caravan does not generally demand much maintenance, certain parts need replacing in order to prevent failure. Replacing the brakes on a Dodge Caravan is simple and can be performed in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Car jack
  • Lug nut wrench
  • Pliers
  • New brake pads
  • Put the van in park and jack the driver's side front wheel up with the car jack. Make sure to jack the wheel up high enough that the tire no longer touches the ground.

  • Use the lug nut wrench to remove the lug nuts from the wheel and then slide the wheel off of the studs. Use the socket wrench to remove the two mounting bolts holding the brake caliper onto the steering strut.

  • Pull the caliper free from the strut and then use the pliers to pull the brake pads from inside the calipers (they are held in with a two pronged retainer clip, which will need to be disengaged upon removal). Slide the new brake pads into the caliper and press them into position.

  • Slide the caliper back onto the steering strut and then remount the caliper with the mounting bolts and socket wrench. Slide the wheel back into place and remount it with the lug nut wrench. Lower the van down off of the jack and then repeat the steps on the other wheels.
