How to Replace License Plate Lights on a Chevy S10 Pickup

Most states have a few requirements for cars on the road: They all require a license plate and most require a light to illuminate that plate. When that bulb goes out, the majority of drivers don't notice until either they're pulled over by police or someone else tells them. Fortunately, replacing the bulb is easy to do and can be done in just a few minutes with no special tools and with a minimal amount of money.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement license plate bulb
  • Crawl underneath the truck and locate the back of the license plate lights. There is a harness running into the bumper that splits into two wires that go to each side of the license plate.

  • Twist the socket out of the bumper by turning it counterclockwise, then pulling the socket out of the housing.

  • Pull the bulb out of the socket and then replace it with the new replacement bulb. Once that's installed, reinsert the socket into the bumper and twist it to lock it into position. If necessary, repeat this process on the other side.
