How to Reduce Supercharger Noise

Superchargers offer great benefits along with an easy installation for most at-home mechanics. These devices can give your vehicle better fuel efficiency, more horsepower and a new look in just a few steps. They will also cause additional noise, but there are a few ways to minimize this.

  • Understand how superchargers function. They pull in and circulate additional air into the engine, cooling it down to run better. This increases your horsepower and the overall efficiency of the engine.

  • Make sure the supercharger has been installed properly. If not installed properly, there could be gaps or air leaks causing the noise to be louder than it is supposed to be. Once the problem is fixed, it should quiet down. Automotive store professionals can tell you if the supercharger is properly installed.

  • Consider buying a tip for the exhaust system. Tips are made in a variety of sizes, shapes, noise levels and styles to fit over the end of the exhaust pipe. Ask an exhaust shop or parts dealer to match an exhaust tip to your car. Check out Magnaflow and Hedman Hedders for exhaust tips and mufflers.

  • Find a supercharger with multiple back flow ports. These ports equalize the air pressure in the chambers of the supercharger to reduce noise. Look for Whipple or Powerdyne, brands known for quiet superchargers.
