How to Display the Outside Temperature in a Car

Most modern vehicles are equipped with temperature display gauges, either along the dash panel or in a corner of the rear-view mirror. These gauges display the outside temperature inside the car. An ambient temperature sensor is equipped to the exterior of the auto and relays the information to the display gauge. Because traveling automobiles create wind chill effects, the sensor is calibrated and located in areas where there is little to no wind. If your vehicle is not equipped with these devices, use an aftermarket temperature gauge you install yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Aftermarket auto temperature display gauge and sensor
  • Vinyl cleaner and rags
  • Screwdriver (optional)
  • Determine where the sensor for the temperature gauge is to be installed on the outside for the auto. Recommended areas include under the wheel wells, along the rain gutters on the roof or sides, or just to the inside of a trunk.

  • Spray vinyl cleaner onto the dash where the display gauge is to be installed. Decide the location based on space and ease of seeing the display. Wipe off the dash area with a rag to prepare it for the display gauge. Mount the display gauge via the kit's mounting methods. Common methods include sticky adhesive on the base of the gauge, Velcro or screws.

  • Install the temperature sensor in the desired location outside the auto. Common methods of installation include screwing the base plate to the exterior, clips or sticky base adhesives.

  • Turn on the display gauge and follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the sensor to the display. Set the gauge to your desired settings, Celsius or Fahrenheit.
