How to Make a Hard Top Hoist for a Jeep TJ

Chrysler introduced the Jeep Wrangler TJ in 1997. No Jeep Wrangler was produced for the model year 1996 between the end of the Wrangler YJ series in 1995 and the TJ in 1997. The Wrangler The TJ, like previous models had an optional, removable, hard top. Several companies make hoists for lifting and storing these tops but you can build your own.

Things You'll Need

  • Stud finder
  • Lag bolts
  • Wall mounted hand winch with 12 feet of rope and hook
  • 2 200 pound pulleys
  • 2 3 foot steel conduit 1/2 inch diameter
  • 2 4 foot 6 inch steel conduit 1/2 inch diameter
  • 4 1/2 inch steel conduit elbows
  • 25 foot nylon rope
  • 4 padded S-hooks
  • Mount the winch on the garage wall. Use the stud finder to locate a stud in the wall. Mount the winch to the stud using the lag bolts approximately 4 feet off the floor. Ensure the handle of the winch clears the wall when turned in a full circle.

  • Mount the pulleys. Use the stud finder to locate ceiling joists above the location where the top is to hang. Mount a pulley to the joist above the winch. Mount the other pulley to the joist where the Jeep top will hang. String the nylon rope and hook through both pulleys. Leave some rope slack to attach the frame later.

  • Build the top hanging frame. Using the conduit pieces and elbows assemble a 3 foot by 4 foot 6 inch frame. Ensure the rectangle is perfectly squared.

  • Cut four 40-inch pieces of nylon rope. Attach each piece to a corner of the metal frame. Do not use square knots. Tie the ends of the ropes to the hook. All pieces must be even to ensure the frame hangs parallel to the floor. Attach the four padded S-hooks to the frame. Lift the frame using the winch until the hook reaches the pulley.

  • Remove the Wrangler TJ hard top. Back the Wrangler into the garage and under the frame. Use the winch to lower the frame until it is several inches above the hard top. Unbolt the hard top from the Wrangler. Lift the hard top and hang a corner on each S-hook. Use the winch to lift the hard top to the pulley and drive the Wrangler from under it.
