How to Hook Up Trailer Lights to a Toyota Pickup

Many Toyota pickup trucks are capable of towing small- to medium-sized trailers; however, many automobiles lack a factory-installed trailer outlet receptacle. Typically, small- and medium-sized trailers are electrically wired so the brakes and turn signals are displayed by a single signal bulb on each side of the trailer. Nearly all Toyota trucks have separate turn and brake signal lamps. For this reason, a taillight converter is required before a trailer can be connected to the truck's electrical system.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire splice connectors
  • Electrical pliers
  • Trailer light taillight converter
  • Screwdriver
  • Trailer with installed four-way electrical plug
  • Unscrew both tail lamp assemblies, and pull them forward to expose the tail lamp wires. Each wire color is marked as to its function on the back of the tail lamp assembly.

  • Place a splice connector over the right turn signal wire. Insert the green wire from the converter into the splice connector, and crimp the connector closed.

  • Place a splice connector over the left turn signal wire. Insert the yellow wire from the converter into the splice connector, and crimp the connector closed.

  • Place a splice connector over the taillight signal wire. Insert the brown wire from the converter into the splice connector, and crimp the connector closed.

  • Place a splice connector over one of the brake signal wires. Insert the red wire from the converter into the splice connector, and crimp the connector closed.

  • Place a splice connector over one of the ground wires. Insert the white wire from the converter into the splice connector, and crimp the connector closed.

  • Insert the trailer-end plug into the outlet dongle on the bottom of the taillight converter; this plug only fits one way. Turn on the automobile headlamps, and check to see whether the trailer lights are illuminated. If the trailer marker lamps are unlit, check to see whether the connection between the converter outlet dongle and the trailer plug is snug.
