How to Install a Hood Protector

Driving down the road during the summer can be a disgusting experience, especially at night. Sometimes it seems as if every bug in the neighborhood is intent on suicide on your windshield. A hood protector is a strip of plastic that mounts on the front of the hood of a car or truck and deflects bugs. It protects the paint on the hood from flying debris when the vehicle is in motion, and may also help prevent rocks from cracking the windshield.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Remove the grill assembly if it is attached to the hood of your vehicle. Refer to the owner's manual for your specific vehicle for instructions on how to remove it.

  • Locate the mounting holes on the bottom of the hood. For some vehicles, you may need to drill the holes yourself.

  • Clean the edge of the hood using rubbing alcohol.

  • Position the hood protector so the holes in the protector line up with the holes in the bottom of the hood. Screw the mounting screws into the holes.

  • Remove the cover from the adhesive strip supplied with the hood protector, and press it down against the hood. This protects the paint from rubbing the edge of the hood and scratching the paint.

  • Replace any grill parts you removed during step 1.
