How to Change the Bolt Pattern From 5X4.75 to 5X4.5

A 5X4.75 wheel lug pattern means the wheel has five studs spread out in a 4.75-inch wheel pattern. Likewise, a wheel lug pattern of 5X4.5 has five studs spread out in a slightly smaller pattern of 4.5 inches. You cannot place a wheel designed for a 5X4.75 wheel pattern onto a wheel hub with a 5X4.5 pattern unless you install a wheel adapter plate onto the 5X4.5 wheel hub first. Installing a wheel adapter gives you the ability to use different wheels with different patterns on your car.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • Lug nut wrench
  • Wheel adapter
  • Torque wrench
  • Lift the car with a jack, and place the car onto jack stands.

  • Remove the five lug nuts from the wheel with a lug nut wrench, place the lug nuts off to the side and remove the tire from the wheel hub.

  • Slide the 5X4.55 to 5X4.5 wheel spacer onto the wheel lug studs.

  • Thread the lug nuts supplied with the wheel spacer onto the threaded posts of the wheel hub. Thread each nut into place with your fingers. The nuts are tapered on the end to help center the wheel adapter on the wheel hub. Tighten each lug nut with a torque wrench. Use the specifications from the manufacturer to ensure you get the adapters tight enough.

  • Place the new wheel onto the adapter wheel studs and thread on the second set of lug nuts provided with the adapter. Tighten each lug nut with a torque wrench. Use the specifications from the manufacturer to ensure you get the adapters tight enough.

  • Remove the car from the jack stands, and lower the car to the ground after installing the adapter on the other three wheels.
