Budget Throttle-Body EFI

The only problem with aftermarket electronic fuel injection (EFI) is that it's far more expensive than a carburetor. Blower Drive Service (BDS) is aware of this and has developed a throttle-body EFI system that's much simpler than the multipoint systems, yet still offers many of the same advantages.

Throttle-body EFI differs from multipoint in that the injectors are located in the throttle body. This creates, in essence, an electronic carburetor, because the throttle body bolts directly to the top of a carbureted intake manifold. The BDS system comes complete with a throttle body, a computer, a wiring harness, a fuel pump and sensors. All you need to supply is a computer-style HEI distributor, fuel line and fittings (and BDS can supply those too). The function and design of the BDS throttle-body system is similar to most EFI setups.

Perhaps the most complex requirement is a high-pressure (45-psi) fuel-delivery line with a separate fuel return. The high-pressure inlet feeds four injectors mounted directly on the throttle body. The BDS system uses an ACCEL electronic-fuel-injection computer that's compatible with an EFI distributor, giving the user complete control over both the fuel and spark curves. Add the optional heated-oxygen-sensor harness and you can run the engine in closed loop at a 14.7:1 air/fuel ratio, which does wonders for improved fuel economy and throttle response. The ACCEL electronics package also makes tuning much easier and quicker, resulting in excellent throttle response and power.

Granted, any throttle body cannot promise power over a well-tuned carburetor, and the system still sells for around $1600. However, this is the age of electronics, and the ability to tune this combination is far more sophisticated and offers excellent driveability that would be difficult to attain with a carburetor. Once you've been exposed to the advantages of electronics, you'll never look at a carburetor the same way again.
