How to Remove the Exhaust From a Mustang GT

The engine in a Ford Mustang GT creates exhaust gases from the internal combustion process. These gases run through the exhaust system and exit out the tailpipe. The exhaust system can be restrictive on these cars, and one way to increase horsepower and gain performance is to remove the exhaust from the car and then install a new system. This can be done in a few hours. But first, you need to remove the old exhaust.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • 24-inch pry bar
  • 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set
  • Park the Mustang on a level surface. Lift the car using the jack so that the entire car is supported by jack stands and there is enough room for you to work freely underneath the car.

  • Crawl underneath the rear of the Mustang by the muffler. Unbolt the muffler from the rear section of the exhaust using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the muffler off of the exhaust hanger using a pry bar and then remove the muffler and accompanying exhaust tubing away from the car.

  • Put a pair of jack stands underneath the middle section of the exhaust. Remove the hangers on the exhaust with the pry bar. Unbolt the exhaust from the forward section of exhaust with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, and then slowly lower the exhaust out of the car.

  • Unbolt the forward section of the exhaust from the exhaust manifolds using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Unplug the oxygen sensors from the exhaust with your hands. Remove the remaining exhaust hangers with the pry bar or the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, and then remove the remaining portion of the exhaust from the underside of the Mustang.
